Forest Service Pushes Grand Targhee Expansion Timeline Again
ALTA — The U.S. Forest Service has delayed the release of the Final Environmental Impact Statement for Grand Targhee Resort's proposed expansion, pushing the timeline back by four months.
The FEIS, previously expected this month, is now estimated for July 2026. The objection period will begin when the FEIS drops, and a decision on the scope of the project is now anticipated for February 2027, with any approved construction beginning in March 2027. The revised schedule compresses the objection window from twelve months to eight.
Forest Service officials did not respond to requests for comment before press time.
The expansion proposal, submitted by resort owner Geordie Gillett's team in 2018, would significantly expand the resort's permit area on public land, add new lifts and terrain, expand snowmaking, and construct guest service facilities. The most controversial elements include extending the resort boundary south into Teton Canyon and Mill Creek — areas that wildlife advocates describe as critical habitat.
Separately, Teton County, Wyoming is processing development applications for 120 acres of private land at the base area, where plans call for cabins, condominiums, hotels, restaurants, and retail. All sales tax and property tax revenue from that development would flow to Wyoming, while the fiscal costs of increased traffic, emergency services, waste management, and housing pressure would fall primarily on Teton County, Idaho.
Idaho officials have consistently raised concerns about this dynamic. Teton County Idaho's commissioners have requested revenue-sharing with Idaho, housing mitigation on the Idaho side, and formal consultation with Idaho service providers, but have limited leverage over a project that sits across the state line.
What to watch: The FEIS release in July will trigger a 90-day public comment period — the last major opportunity for public input before a federal decision.
